How to Clean a Gun with foam cleaning swabs?
Today’s defensive handguns are rugged, reliable machines, but they won’t stay that way if they’re not properly maintained.Properly cleaning your guns will keep them functioning effectively and firing safely. You should clean a gun after every time you fire it, and particularly after target practice when you are firing lots of rounds.Below are processes of cleaning your handguns.
Part 1 of 3:Getting Prepared
1.Get a cleaning kit.
A basic handgun cleaning tool set includes:
Cleaning solvent
Lubricant, or gun oil
A bore brush
A patch holder and patches
Cleaning rod
Cotton swabs
Microfiber cloths for polishing
2.Unload your gun.
Always take the time to properly unload your gun and double-check to make sure that it's unloaded every time you pick it up to clean it.
3.Disassemble your gun.
Check the owner's manual for disassembly instructions to prepare the gun for cleaning.
4. Work in a well-ventilated area.
The chemicals and compounds produced by shooting, as well as the ones used to clean and lubricate, are toxic and should be handled with care.A well-ventilated area can reduce the harm of that.
Part 2 of 3: Cleaning the Gun
1. Clean out the barrel.
Soak the bore, or inside of the barrel, using a cleaning rod, patch holder and the right size cotton patches for your gun. Push the solvent-soaked patch through the bore until it exits the other end. Remove the patch, don't pull it back through. Pulling it back through will just redeposit all the gunk you clean off.
2. Alternate the bore brush and patches to scrub the barrel.
Remove the patch holder and attach the bore brush. Run the bore brush back and forth along the full length of the bore 3 or 4 times to loosen any debris. Then, reattach the patch holder and run solvent-soaked cotton patches through the bore. Remove them when they exit the front. Repeat this process until a patch comes out clean.
3. Lubricate the barrel.
Apply a few drops of lubricant to the cotton mop and run it through the bore to leave a light coating of gun oil on the inside.
4.Wipe down the rest of your gun.
Use a luster cloth or old t-shirts to remove the remaining debris, including acid from fingerprints, and add shine.
Part 3 of 3: Maintaining Guns
At last,to prolong the life of your guns, store them unloaded in a cool and dry environment.
